Many computer users are now using media websites regular basis for various purposes, such as entertainment, education or learning purposes. In Ubuntu operating system, you can easily run videos from YouTube or other media based websites but there is no default video downloader to download the video and run it in offline. There are many free apps available in Ubuntu to download video quickly for offline use. One of them is clipgrab. Using this Ubuntu app you can easily download video from most of the popular media websites. How to install and use clipgrab to download the video in Ubuntu is shown in this article.

Install Clipgrab in Ubuntu

You can use clibgrab in Ubuntu in two ways. One is to download the precompiled file of this app from the official website and double click the file to run. In this way, you don’t need to install this app to download the video. Another way is to install this app by running some Ubuntu commands which is described in this article. To install this you have to open the terminal by pressing “Ctrl+Alt+T” and run the following Ubuntu commands.


$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:clipgrab-team/ppa

This command will require some time to complete the task. After completion, when the screen looks like the following screenshot then press ENTER to continue.

You have to update your system before starting clipgrap installation process. So run the Ubuntu update command.


$ sudo apt-get update

Now run the clipgrab installation command. During the installation process, press y when y/n prompt arrives to complete the process.


$ sudo apt-get install clipgrab

Open the Clipgrab to download the video file

After successful installation of clipgrab, if you type clipgrab in dash home search box then the following app icon will be shown.

Click on the icon to open the clipgrab application.

Now search any video link from YouTube that you want to download and copy the link. Click on the download tab of the clipgrab and paste the link. Select the video format and quality from the dropdown list. It supports various type of video formats such as mp3, mp4, ogg, ogv etc. The video quality can be varied from 260p to 720p. To set more download options you can select the setting tab of this app. You can select default folder, enable the option to embed metadata with saved video, set proxy configuration, enable system tray icon etc. by using this tab.

After selecting desired video format and quality, click the Grab this clip! button to select the location where the video file will be saved.

When the video file successfully downloaded by clipgrab then the following screen will have appeared.

Now you can open the downloaded file location by clicking Open the target folder of the selected download button. Click on the downloaded video file and test the video is working properly or not. You can use this app not only to download YouTube videos but also to download videos from Vimeo and Dailymotion websites.
